-
Medium mixing bowl
-
Whisk

Ingredients
Main Pie Ingredients
-
1 lb (450g) Lean Ground Beef (85/15 or 90/10 lean works best)
-
1 cup Yellow Onion, finely chopped
-
½ tsp Salt
-
¼ tsp Black Pepper
-
½ tsp Garlic Powder (optional, for extra flavor)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
-
1 cup Cheddar Cheese, shredded (sharp cheddar adds the best flavor)
The “Magic” Batter
-
½ cup Original Bisquick™ Baking Mix (or homemade pancake/baking mix)
-
1 cup Milk (whole or 2% milk)
-
2 large Eggs
Optional Burger Toppings (for serving)
-
Shredded iceberg lettuce
-
Diced fresh tomatoes
-
Sliced pickles or pickle relish
-
Ketchup and mustard drizzle
-
Crispy crumbled bacon bits
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep & Preheat
-
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
-
Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate with non-stick cooking spray or a light coating of butter. Set aside.
Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef & Onion
-
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Add the chopped yellow onion and ground beef.
-
Cook for about 6 to 8 minutes, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until the beef is browned and no longer pink.
-
Carefully drain off any excess grease or fat from the skillet.
-
Return the skillet to low heat. Stir in the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and remove from heat.
Step 3: Layer the Pie Base
-
Transfer the seasoned ground beef mixture into the prepared 9-inch pie plate, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
-
Sprinkle the 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the beef layer.
Step 4: Whisk the Batter
-
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ½ cup Bisquick baking mix, 1 cup milk, and 2 eggs.
-
Whisk vigorously for about 1 minute until the mixture is smooth and mostly free of lumps.
Step 5: Pour & Bake
-
Pour the liquid batter slowly and evenly over the beef and cheese layers in the pie plate.
-
Place the pie plate in the center rack of your preheated oven.
-
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is puffed and beautifully golden brown.
Step 6: Cool & Serve
-
Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 to 10 minutes. Note: Allowing it to rest helps the pie set so it slices easily into neat wedges.
-
Slice into 6 wedges and serve warm with your favorite cheeseburger toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, or a drizzle of ketchup.
Flavor Variations & Customization Ideas
-
Bacon Cheeseburger Pie: Fold ½ cup of cooked, crumbled bacon into the ground beef mixture along with the cheese.
-
Mushroom & Swiss Pie: Replace cheddar with shredded Swiss cheese and sauté 1 cup of sliced mushrooms alongside the onions.
-
Spicy Jalapeño Patty Melt Pie: Add 1 finely diced jalapeño to the beef while browning, and use Pepper Jack cheese in place of cheddar.
-
Low-Carb / Gluten-Free Option: Swap traditional baking mix with a gluten-free baking blend or a low-carb keto baking mix.
Storage & Meal Prep Guidelines
-
Refrigeration: Store leftover pie slices in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
-
Freezing: Allow the baked pie to cool completely. Wrap individual slices or the entire pie tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
-
Reheating: Reheat individual slices in the microwave on HIGH for 60 to 90 seconds, or heat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes until warmed through and crisp.
